Appraisal, Survey, & Inspection: What's the difference?

It's easy to confuse some professions you may deal with in the home buying process, specifically, the surveyor, appraiser, and home inspector.


A surveyor finds, marks, and/or maps the legal boundaries of a property.


An appraiser determines the (general) value of a property, based on details of the home and recent prices of similar homes sold in an area.


A home inspectors job is to to closely inspect the items around, on, and in the home itself, noting defects and creating an in depth list, a.k.a. 'report'.
